Achilles Tendonitis
The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that connects the heel to the calf muscle. The tendon assists the body with activities such as jumping, running and walking. Achilles tendonitis refers to the micro-tears (and pain) that result from the overuse of the Achilles tendon.
Causes
Achilles Tendonitis may be caused by multiple factors. Some of them may include:
- Running for long periods of time
- Playing stop-and-go sports such as soccer or basketball
- Inadequate stretching
- Improper footwear for the activity
- Wearing high heels for a long period of time
- Flat feet
Since micro-tears in the Achilles tendon are what causes the pain, any sort of over-strenuous activity or sport that is played for too long can have the potential to lead to Achilles tendonitis.
Symptoms
Symptoms are indicators of a problem and for Achilles tendonitis, some of them may include:
- Calf muscles that feel tight
- A soreness above the back of the heel
- Pain when extending the ankle
- More severe pain after activities such as jumping and running
Additionally, symptoms of Achilles tendonitis may worsen with increased activity intensity and duration.
Treatment
For anyone who has Achilles tendonitis and partakes in constant physical activity, such as runners, orthotics and the proper footwear are highly effective long-term solutions.
- Custom orthotics work by supporting the body’s frame through the foot. This is done by realigning the ankle and lower legs in order to correct the motion of the foot. In the case of Achilles tendonitis, Rite Gait’s handcrafted custom orthotics will be designed to control overpronation while stabilizing the muscles. They will also include heel lifts to help heal the achilles tendon and be optimized to help your feet properly perform shock absorption both while standing as well as during activities such as walking and running.
- The proper footwear is important in the treatment of Achilles tendonitis. Specifically, the footwear must stabilize the heel, have a well-cushioned sole to absorb impact during walking and running, and be comfortable for the wearer.
At Rite Gait, our pedorthists will handcraft your custom orthotics and help you find the perfect footwear in order to treat flat feet. Additionally, if we don’t already carry the perfect footwear to suit your needs, we can make modifications using the onsite lab.
